Gintama: Jump Anime Tour 2008 Special Review

Sunrise recognised the demand for a Gintama movie and so took the concept of a teaser, expanded it a little and made Shiroyasha Koutan for the 2008 Jump Anime Tour event. With only a little information on the anime, most of us assumed it would be ten full minutes of epicness set during the Joui war and covering sections of Gintoki's past, and although what we got wasn't really we were expecting, it was still a pleasant treat for Gintama fans.

In essence, this anime is simply a build up, or a supporting act before the main event starts. The first four minutes of Shiroyasha Koutan are beautifully re-animated backstory sequences from the main series, with additional footage here and there, that have been pieced together to create a trailer for a fictional Gintama movie. Once the trailer is over, we find ourselves in the movie theatre with the main gang, who begin to comment on the trailer and in hilarious Gintama style start to break the fourth wall. Before long the main supporting cast show up and start creating havoc but before we realise, its already time for Shiroyasha Koutan to end. The characters, being as unpredictable as they are, reveal the true purpose of the anime; which is to build up the excitement for the One Piece special that follows Shiroyasha Koutan at the Jump Festa event.

Shiroyasha Koutan is both hilariously well done and unbelievably deceptive. Although being Gintama, perhaps that should have been expected. For those of us who just simply love the main series, for those of us who are dying to see a Gintama movie and for One Piece fans who love a parody; this anime is a must. In only ten minutes, the audience are treated to wonderfully crisp, movie-worthy animation, hilarious comedy, all of the characters we love, some of the best songs ever featured in an anime and total enjoyment. If you have never seen Gintama or One Piece, you'll probably wonder what all the buzz is about, but if you are familiar with the series mentioned, you'll definitely get a kick out of Shiroyasha Koutan. Watch it, wish it were true and enjoy.
